The Cup Series returns to an oval after a wildly successful event in Chicago. The first-ever street race in NASCAR history was a hit, with supercar veteran driver Shane Van Gisbergen beating the best stock car drivers to grab the checkered flag, giving the New Zealander a spot in the playoffs. Many drivers struggled on the roads of the Windy City, which made things very interesting.

Van Gisbergen became the 11th different driver to win a race this season, shrinking the possibility of a winless competitor moving on to the postseason.
