Lehighton Area High School teacher charged in sex trafficking investigation


A veteran social studies teacher at Lehighton Area High School was arrested in a human sex trafficking investigation, according to court records and the school district.

Michael James Feifel, 55, of Walnutport is accused of two third-degree felonies: unlawful contact with a minor involving prostitution and criminal use of a communication facility.

He was arraigned Thursday by District Judge Karen Devine and freed on $15,000 bail.

In a message to the Lehighton Area School District community, Superintendent Christina E. Fish said Feifel’s arrest stemmed from a joint investigation by Lehigh, Northampton and Berks counties. The district and Feifel are cooperating with the investigation, she wrote.

Feifel’s LinkedIn page says he has taught at the high school for 27 years. The Lehighton Times-News says he has been a football coach at several schools in District 11 and was involved in student overseas travel programs.
